Mid-Autumn Festival The 15th day of the 8th lunar month is the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the "Mooncake Festival." This is the second most important festival in China, symbolizing reunion and happiness. According to legend, Chang'e flew to the moon after taking an elixir, becoming a fairy on the moon. Every year at the Mid-Autumn Festival, families reunite together to admire the moon and eat mooncakes. Mooncakes are round, symbolizing family reunion, and contain various fillings like lotus paste, red bean paste, and salted egg yolk. On Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese people also have the tradition of carrying lanterns — colorful lanterns light up the night sky.
